McNeese’s Saina, New Orleans’ Kleshchukova Grab First 2019 Weekly Honors

first_imgFRISCO, Texas – McNeese’s Daniel Saina and New Orleans’ Arina Kleshchukova are the Southland Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. All Southland weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank.Saina and his McNeese teammates will take the weekend off before heading to Houston, Texas, for the Rice Invitational Friday, Sept. 13.Kleshchukova and the New Orleans squad are also idle this week, but will return to the course Saturday, Sept. 14 for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Festival in New Orleans.Men’s Athlete of the Week: Daniel Saina, McNeese – Jr. – Eldoret, Kenya Saina led a dominant Cowboys’ performance at home over the weekend against LSU, Southeastern Louisiana and Louisiana College in the McNeese Season Opener. The junior took first-place overall honors, leading a trio of Cowboys runners in the top-five finishers.Honorable Mention: Kevin Kipkosgei, Abilene Christian; Anthony Cordero, Southeastern Louisiana; Isaac Vargas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.Women’s Athlete of the Week: Arina Kleshchukova, New Orleans – Jr. – Bishkek, KyrgyzstanKleshchukova won the New Orleans XC Opener, besting the second-place finisher by an impressive 28 seconds. The junior’s performance marked a new personal best in the 4k event, her first career individual victory and the first individual victory by a New Orleans women’s runner since Oct. 29, 2005. Kleshchukova paced the Privateers to a third-place finish behind Tulane and Nicholls with 56 points.Honorable Mention: Briahna Gerlach, Abilene Christian; Holly Roberts, McNeese, Valentina Campos, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Firefighters rescue 3 dogs from SW MiamiDade house fire 1 survives

first_imgSOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – An electrical problem caused a fire to break out at a house in Southwest Miami-Dade that led crews to rescue three dogs inside, but two did not survive, officials said.Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the home in the area of Southwest 118th Avenue and 212th Street, just before 5:30 a.m., Thursday.Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming from the left side of the house and made their way inside.After working to battle the flames, the fire was put out shortly after.Officials said there were no residents inside the home, but three dogs were rescued.Firefighters worked to resuscitate the dogs by giving them oxygen, but only one survived.Officials later determined the cause of the fire was electrical.
