The ground breaking programme works with mostly young motorists convicted of road traffic offences such as drink driving, dangerous driving and speeding. The programme encourages drivers to assess their driving habits. To date, more than 100 offenders have been referred by the local courts to participate in the programme. The programme encourages those taking part to review and assess their attitudes to driving and how they can affect other people.Local Judge Paul Kelly has been a strong advocate of the programme from its early days. Now local TD Padraig Mac Lochlainn thinks the programme should go nationwide. He was speaking after presenting certificates to the latest group of participants.Deputy Mac Lochlainn said “I am delighted with the success of this remarkable programme. I have requested that the two Oireachtas Committees on Transport and Justice invite the Pro-Social Drivers Programme team to present to them. I will be seeking my Oireachtas colleague’s support to recommend to the Ministers for Transport and Justice that they are resourced to deliver this programme across the country.“This team are doing Donegal proud. For years, the news from Donegal in terms of road safety has been often devastating. It is refreshing to have this dedicated group of professionals from Donegal delivering a ground breaking programme that is not just changing the driving habits of offenders but is without a doubt, saving lives”.“Our justice system must ensure not only law enforcement but rehabilitation. The levels of repeat offending or recidivism are unacceptably high and programmes like this one that intervene early to change the actions and attitudes that lead to law breaking, in an enlightened and person centred way, are so important. “Their success to date has been remarkable and now they need to be adequately resourced to make the next steps”.DONEGAL’S UNIQUE DRIVING PROGRAMME TO BE WHEELED OUT ACROSS THE COUNTRY was last modified: April 13th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:courtsdonegalJudge Paul KellyPRO SOCIAL DRIVERS PROGRAMMElast_img
