ORLANDO >> The text messages filled Julius Randle’s inbox arguably as quickly as he runs the fast break.Randle and his fiancée, Kendra Shaw, welcomed the birth of their first baby boy on Friday morning in Los Angeles. Shortly after, Lakers coach Luke Walton, D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson and Nick Young were among the team’s brass to text him with a congratulatory message. “I’m just proud of him,” Young said after the Lakers’ 109-90 loss to the Orlando Magic on Friday at Amway Center. “He’s got a little Julius out there now.”Randle’s son is actually named Kyden, who weighed in at 8 pounds, 9 ounces and 21 inches tall. The Lakers reported that Kendra Shaw and Kyden Randle are doing fine. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Though Jackson has won 11 NBA championships, plenty of NBA teams dismiss his triangle offense. So, Jackson advised Shaw to distance himself from his influence during coaching interviews. That connection, though, prompted Magic coach Frank Vogel to add Shaw to his coaching staff with the Indiana Pacers (2013-15). Then, Vogel often asked Shaw one question that covered various scenarios. “It was, ‘How would Phil do it?’” Vogel said. Vogel asked those questions on various issues, such as how did Jackson organize shootarounds or determine when to rest a player. Most of the themes centered on Jackson’s coaching demeanor. “Phil wasn’t high strung,” Vogel said. “There is a lot of talk about his Zen. But it’s a calm mental adjustment. There’s great value in that. I d like to think my personality is more that way than the ‘raging, yell-at-everybody’ type of coach. I drew confidence that type of approach works.”Injury updateLakers guard Jose Calderon completed a pre-game workout, which marked some progress since missing the past 10 games with a strained right hamstring. Calderon expects to practice soon, though when remains unclear. Lakers forward Tarik Black missed Friday’s game in Orlando in what marked the eighth game he has sat in the past nine contests because of an injured right ankle. Black could return on Sunday against the Clippers, though he would need to complete a pre-game workout since the Lakers will not practice on Saturday. Randle missed games in Miami and Orlando this week to be with his fiancée. But the Lakers expect that Randle will play on Sunday against the Clippers at Staples Center.Young, who has a son named Nick Jr., joked he did not plan on offering Randle any fatherly advice just yet. “I don’t want to teach him the ways yet,” Young said. “I want him to deal with the late night wake ups when the mom don’t want to wake up and he’s got to rock (Kyden) to sleep. Once he gets back to one or 11 months, I’ll teach him on the basketball court and teach him how to shoot.” The Zen approachA running joke between former Lakers coach Phil Jackson and former Lakers associate coach Brian Shaw illustrated the interesting juxtaposition regarding Jackson’s reputation.
