New Delhi: The Manchester City on Sunday beat Brighton 4-1 to win the Premier League title for the second consecutive time, even as the Liverpool defeated Wolves at Anfield to finish second. Pep Guardiola’s side became the first team to retain the Premier League title since Manchester United 10 years ago.Had they lost the game, Liverpool would have win their first title in 29 years as the latter was too close to them at the points table. However, the win ensured crown for them. The Man City had a perfect season with 14 out of 14 wins to grab the crown with 100 points.City remain on course to complete the first ever domestic treble in English football in the FA Cup final next weekend as goals from Sergio Aguero, Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan saw the visitors recover from Glenn Murray’s shock opener. For 83 seconds Liverpool fans were able to dream, but City showed why they are champions and have racked up a remarkable 98 points, just two shy of their record century of points last season.Liverpool applied as much pressure as they could with their own nine-game winning run to end the season and went in front early against Wolves to raise the tension inside the Amex Stadium.City had not conceded in their previous four games, but Brighton were playing on their nerves as they sought revenge for defeat in their FA Cup semi-final last month.Ali Jahanbakhsh flashed a shot just wide of Ederson’s right-hand post before the moment that was celebrated as wildly 270 miles north at Anfield as it was on the south coast.Pascal Gross’s dangerous in-swinging corner was powered home by veteran striker Murray at the near post on 27 minutes. This was the first time City had failed to score first in a league game since early December and the first time they had trailed at all in the 14-game winning run that has carried them to the title. However, Brighton’s lead and Liverpool’s hope lasted just over a minute.WWWWWWWWWWWWWWinners! 14 wins in a row to wrap up and incredible season! 🔵 #mancity pic.twitter.com/ONrqLSGrOe— Manchester City (@ManCity) May 12, 2019This is a breaking news story. 1 Tony Popovic Western Sydney Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer says he will not stop Tony Popovic from quitting the club to take charge of Crystal Palace. The former Eagles defender, currently boss of the A-League side, is being linked with the managerial vacancy at Selhurst Park following Neil Warnock’s departure. And Lederer insists he will not stand in the 41-year-old’s way should the Premier League side come calling.“Absolutely. If he was bettering himself and went to the EPL and he got the top job, I’d be wishing him all the best and good luck to him,” Lederer said in the Sydney Morning Herald. There has been no confirmation of an approach from Palace as of yet for Popovic, with Alan Pardew also being heavily linked with the job, and Lederer is awaiting talks with his manager.“I’m absolutely sure we’ll be discussing it,” said Lederer. “It could be as early as tomorrow or the day after, we’ll certainly be discussing it.”Popovic played for Palace between 2001 and 2006 and also served as an assistant to former manager Dougie Freedman in 2012.Since then he has been in charge of Sydney, guiding them to the A-League title and more impressively the AFC Champions League crown.
